3 Ways To Understand Internet Traffic

Anyone who has a successful online business didn't get there easily. You have to continually research your niche, your competitors and also related niches running around out in the wild internet. The one part of your online business that you do control is your website, so understanding the traffic coming to your website is vital for you if you ever intend to succeed. So now lets look at some ways to better understand web traffic.

#1 - Google Analytics

The first tool we will take a look at is probably one of the most widely used tools, Google Analytics. Google offers this marketing tool for free and the information you can gather about your website using analytics is immense.

The website interface is very user-friendly and focuses on the four main concerns most webmaster's have: Visitors, Traffic Sources, Content & Goals.
Visitors: you can track what country a visitor lives in, how long they stay at your site, how many pages they look at and much more.
Traffic Sources: you can track where your visitors are coming from, generally from search engines, directly or referred by another website.
Content: you can track what pages are most popular, how people are getting to them, what pages people leave from and much more.
Goals: you can setup tracking 'goals'. This means if the user does some certain action like making a purchase or signing up for your newsletter.

#2 - StatCounter

This next internet traffic tool is best for people looking for a standard no fluff type of display. StatCounter can show you the exact same data as google but without the complex website interface. The standard StatCounter output looks like the image below. A list of links to see the information that marketers are looking for.

The basic layout of Statcounter has made it very popular among both novice and advanced webmasters. For people who just 'need to see the numbers' this is definitely the better option.

#3 - Quantcast

The final internet traffic marketing tool we'll take a look at, is Quantcast. This traffic tracking tool is rather new, having just opened in 2006, but the company has put a new standard at tracking public internet usage. The data collected about your website is done so explicitly with marketing in mind. A look at how they profile websites shows you this right away.

Quantcast gives each website a rank with #1 being the highest and they break up visitors into many different groups from ethnicity to education. The accuracy of this information is naturally up to debate, but Quantcast works hard to make sure it's all as accurate as they can possibly make it.
